3. The goal is getting what you want, rather than avoiding what you hate
"Approach Goals" are positive goals that you want to achieve, such as "learning to ride a unicycle" or "trying to get my grades up in school". People who use postive goal terms are more likely to feel better about themselves, and feel more competent and optimistic. When you set up an approach goal, you tend to always focus on how to achieve it and how good you feel when it's achieved. "Avoidance Goals" are goals that you set for yourself so you can avoid a certain situation, like "trying not to get rejected" or "trying not to be so clumsy". If you set an avoidance goal up, you will be hard on yourself should you fail and feel like a "screw-up". Some avoidance goals are actually impossible to achieve (mainly, the more general ones such as "trying not to embarrass yourself"). Therefore, they actually take a lot more effort to work toward or worry about. You are constantly paying attention to how not to screw-up, and always examining your faults and scrutinizing your choices. It's an unbelievable waste of effort that nobody wants to go through. Being college students, it's fairly obvious that you have learned to put in the least amount of effort into anything as possible. [pic here] To JPS Fans: Wow, obvious Wayne trait is obvious.
